FOOF Meeting 5/23/16

May 23:  Bonhoeffer Series, Part 3: “Religionless Christianity”
Living for Christ is more than avoiding sin. It is more than going through the motions.   It is more than applying human reason and principles to difficult situations.  Rather, living for Christ is having an allegiance with God and doing His will.  It is following Jesus wherever He leads.

Greater Columbus Right to Life Banquet with Special Guest, Matt Walsh

Note:  They say the program beings at 6:30 PM, but event is scheduled for 6:00 PM, doors open at 5:45 PM, so I don’t know what that means.

Note:  A prior link is now broken.  It looks like the Columbus Expo Center updated its website.  Also note, Columbus Expo Center does not have this event on it’s website.  Good links as of 6/12/16 are:

Matt is a popular writer and blogger with a large national following whose thoughts on life, faith, family, and our nation routinely reach millions of Americans, especially the social media generation, where one of his opinion pieces was one of the ten most-shared Facebook posts of 2015 (and THE highest opinion piece).  More information is at:

When:  Doors open at 5:45 PM, program begins at 6:30 PM

Where:  Note from the event planners:  “For reasons beyond our control, we are changing the location of our June 13th banquet with Matt Walsh.  It will now be held at the Lausche Building at the Ohio Expo Center.  If you are not familiar with the Expo Center, that is where the State Fair is held.”

FOOF Meeting 5/16/16

We will have Pastor Dave Mann talking with the group.  As a prelude to his talk, he sends a short note:

“Dear Friends, no longer is it true that the only way we can engage the world for Christ is to obtain a passport and board a plane.  The nations are coming to us!  In addition to those who learn language, eat strange food, and engage in different customs, we who stay in our own neighborhoods have new opportunities to share Christ with those who have never heard.  These are historic times.  How can we be faithful to our Lord’s command to make disciples of all nations?  What are the opportunities and challenges?  I look forward to spending the evening with you on Monday, May 16th.”

FOOF Meeting 5/9/16

May 9:  Bonhoeffer Series, Part 2: “Christian Community”
Bonhoeffer learned the importance of Christian community and group life. The church needs to be the conscience of the state, and this was difficult in Nazi Germany.  Christian community and spiritual exercises can prepare those in the church to carry out the will of Jesus in a persecuting world.

Looking ahead, FOOF schedule up to June 6th:

May 16:  Dave Mann, Pastor at UALC  for internationals, both immigrants and students, will share his experiences and speak on reaching out and sharing the Gospel with those who have never heard it.

May 30:  NO FOOF:  Memorial Day

June 6:  Bonhoeffer Series,  Part 4 (final session):   “Come and Die”
When Jesus calls a man, He bids him not to clean up his act, but rather calls him to carry out God’s Will, even if it means death.   In an age of persecution, Christians need to make the best use of everything.   In Nazi Germany, Bonhoeffer knew he had to keep himself in a good place mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  Spiritual exercises built up his spiritual reserves to get him through tough times.

FOOF Meeting 5/2/16

Scheduled this week is the Part 1 of the DVD series on Dietrich Bonhoeffer.   Mark Locher will lead with discussion afterwards. This part will present Bonhoeffer’s early days, his education, and him becoming a German Lutheran pastor.
